This mother raised her only son Johnny in a very loving, but strict and moral fashion, but… little Johnny grew up and moved to the big city. Then little Johnny got himself a female “housemate”. He swore the relationship was platonic. Mom? She wasn’t so sure, so…she got herself invited to Johnny and Stephanie’s (the housemate) apartment. Stephanie, anxious to please Johnny’s Mom pulled out all the stops–a gourmet meal was served on bone china with linen napkins and real silverware. Everything went off without a hitch.
A few days later, Stephanie said to Johnny, “Im not saying she took it, and I’m not saying she didn’t take it, but ever since your Mom was here, we’ve been missing the silver gravy ladle.”
Johnny said: “That doesn’t sound like my mom, but tell you what. I’ll send a quick text and we’ll get this matter cleared up.” So, he wrote the following:
Dear Mom,
I’m not saying you took it, and I’m not saying you didn’t, but ever since you were at our apartment, we’ve been missing the silver gravy ladle.”
Immediately, Mom emailed him back:
Dear Son,
“I’m not saying you’re sleeping with Stephanie and I’m not saying you aren’t. But if she was sleeping in her own bed she would have found the gravy ladle by now.”
King Solomon wrote: “Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only (for) a moment.”
It’s difficult to lie, when there is a person listening to your every word and that person knows the entire truth about everything you say. When we cultivate a reverence for God, we will revere the truth as well because as Solomon’s father, David wrote:“The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.” Because he hears us, we must speak the truth.
