Where were the Secret Service the night that Abraham Lincoln was assassinated?  They were, technically, not mobilized yet. Oddly enough, Lincoln signed the bill to create the Secret Service the night before he went to see the play, Our American Cousin at Ford’s Theater.

The president’s long-time bodyguard was not on duty that night. His substitute, John Parker, left the theater while the President and Mary Lincoln were enjoying  the play and went next door—to a saloon. He was still there when John Wilkes Booth murdered the 16th President of the United States.

Solomon wrote, “Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint”.

People let us down don’t they?  Parents aren’t there for us sometimes. Children disappoint. Friends betray us. Co-workers exasperate us.

King David wrote, “Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help”.

Who then can you trust?  Solomon wrote,” Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths”.

Yes, people let us down, but to be fair, haven’t we also let others down?

When people let us down we must forgive. Why? “If ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses”. And after we forgive, we look up to the one who never fails us.

Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keeps covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations!” Duet.7:9
