On June 21, 1971 Jesus made the front cover of Time Magazine. The Jesus Revolution had arrived.

It swept across the nation like a tidal wave, and as the Apostle Paul wrote, “These things were not done in a corner”. In 1971 everybody was talking about Jesus.  This movement mostly bypassed traditional denominations and like a mighty wind blew into the lives of America’s youth. Many believe it started in Southern California. But did it?

On Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1970, in Wilmore, Kentucky ,the Asbury College student body gathered for what was supposed to be a required chapel service. Students asbury college.jpegbegan filing to the altar one after another. “Then they started pouring to the altar. It just broke,” said the Dean of Students. Throughout the day, students and faculty members spent time in prayer, song and repentance. Many sought forgiveness for misdeeds and recommitted themselves to Christ, while others made personal decisions for the first time. Lexington Herald-Leader religion writer, Paul Prather, said “Asbury’s outbreak might be part of the most influential world-wide renewal of the century,”

The service, a routine meeting, was scheduled for 50 minutes. Instead, it lasted 185 hours non-stop, 24 hours a day. Intermittently, it continued for weeks. Ultimately, it spread across to California, then back across the country and around the globe.

From that one prayer meeting, a mighty revival swept the nation and the world. Can it happen again? “If my people, which are called by name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wciked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sins, and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14
