Liz Murray became homeless just after she turned 15, when her mother died of AIDS, and her father moved to a homeless shelter. Despite her late high school start and lack of a stable home, Murray began attending  a College Prep Academy in Manhattan, graduating in two years. She was awarded a New York Times scholarship for needy students and was accepted into Harvard University.  A made-for-TV film about Murray’s life Homeless to Harvard: The Liz Murray Story was released in 2003.

But most homeless stories don’t end up like Liz’s, do they. Why not?

The Book of Hebrews states that “Faith is the substance of things hoped for.”Without hope it’s a very cruel world. With hope, the world can open up, despite the misery that may surround us.

Jesus once said to a hurting father, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him that believes”. But what if your faith is weak?  That same hurting father replied to Jesus, with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my disbelief “.

Tiny, even weak faith in a Great God can move a mountain.

Faith is also described in the Bible as the “evidence of things not seen.” You need evidence that God answers prayer, that there is hope in your situation, despite the circumstances? That there is hope in a God who desires to be your ally, your friend?  You want evidence? Then come to the dinner table.

The Psalmist wrote, “O taste and see that the Lord is good” It’s supper time. Jesus said,”Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me”.
